On November 27th, 1995 was the official announcement of the switch from the Trojans to the Golden Eagles at a Teambackers Banquet.

To decide on the mascot, University Relations compiled a database of all college level teams and mascots to avoid duplication. Suggested names included the Pride, Northstars, Trailblazers, the Storm and the Phoenix among others.

The mascot was named Regal meaning “of great magnificence, splendid.” A committee selected the name Regal from 66 different names submitted by UMC students. The winning name was submitted by Trevor Brekken, a plant industries management major from Crookston.
